How Plug and AI Pricing Works
$1.00 free credit on install
Every new Slack workspace and every new Microsoft Teams tenant gets $1.00 of credit when the app is installed. No credit card needed to start.
One shared balance per workspace or tenant
Everyone in a Slack workspace (or Microsoft 365 tenant) draws from one credit balance. No per-user licenses, no seat counting — adding teammates adds no fixed cost.
Pay per use at AI provider rates
Each answer is charged from the balance at the AI provider's token rates for the model that answered. Cheap models cost fractions of a cent per request; premium models cost more. See the model list.
10% service fee, taken at top-up
90% of each payment becomes usable credit; 10% is our service fee. That fee is how Plug and AI is paid — there is no subscription on top.
What a Top-Up Buys — 10% Fee Included
You choose the amount at Stripe checkout. The rows below are examples, not fixed packs.
| You pay (before tax) | 10% service fee | Credit added |
|---|---|---|
| $10 | $1 | $9 |
| $50 | $5 | $45 |
| $100 | $10 | $90 |
| $250 | $25 | $225 |
If tax applies at checkout, credit is calculated on the pre-tax amount. Prices in USD. Unused credits may expire 1 year after purchase and are non-refundable except as required by law — see the Terms.
Free Models — What "Free" Means
Plug and AI includes a free model chain made of zero-cost models. Use it with @ai free … in Slack or make it the default with /ai set free.
- Slack: free-chain answers cost $0 and work even when the workspace balance is $0.
- Free capacity is shared and rate-limited. When the free chain fails, the bot retries once on a cheap paid model. A workspace with a positive balance is charged for that one answer automatically, and the reply names the model that answered. A workspace at $0 can get that retry at no charge from a limited shared budget.
- Microsoft Teams: chatting requires a positive tenant balance, including on the free chain.
How to Top Up
In Slack
Open the Plug and AI App Home and click 💳 Buy More Credits. Stripe checkout opens already linked to your workspace; enter the amount you want.
In Microsoft Teams
Open PLAI's Dashboard personal tab in Teams desktop or web (not mobile) and click Top up. Stripe checkout opens in your browser for your tenant. Top-up is not shown in the Teams mobile app.
What Might a Team of 10 Spend? An Illustrative Calculation
This is an illustration, not a typical or guaranteed bill. Your cost depends on how often your team asks, which models answer, and how much text each request carries.
Assumptions
- 10 people × 20 requests per workday × 21 workdays = 4,200 requests/month
- Each request: 3,000 input tokens (question, thread context, instructions) and 700 output tokens
- Model prices: OpenRouter list prices per 1M tokens, as recorded in our model catalog in October 2026
| Model (price in / out per 1M tokens) | Per request | Usage / month | Top-up needed (incl. 10% fee) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free chain ($0 / $0) | $0 | $0 | $0* |
GPT-5.6 Luna — first model in our balanced chain ($0.20 / $1.20) | $0.0006 + $0.00084 = $0.00144 | 4,200 × $0.00144 ≈ $6.05 | $6.05 ÷ 0.9 ≈ $6.72 |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 ($2.00 / $10.00) | $0.006 + $0.007 = $0.013 | 4,200 × $0.013 = $54.60 | $54.60 ÷ 0.9 ≈ $60.67 |
* Slack only, subject to the shared free capacity described above; Teams needs a positive balance to chat. Long threads, channel summaries, attachments, reasoning tokens and web search all increase per-request cost. Provider prices change; the model list shows current rates.
Pay-Per-Use vs Per-Seat AI Subscriptions
Per-seat AI plans charge for every licensed user whether they use AI that month or not. These products differ in scope — Microsoft 365 Copilot, for example, works inside Word, Excel and Outlook — so compare features as well as price.
| Product | Pricing model | Fixed cost, 10 users |
|---|---|---|
| Plug and AI (Slack & Teams) | Pay per use at AI provider rates + 10% top-up fee | $0 + usage |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Business | $21/user/month paid yearly ($18 first-year promo through Dec 31, 2026), or $25.20/user/month on a monthly subscription; up to 300 users; requires a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan | $210/month paid yearly ($180 with promo) · $252/month monthly |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot (enterprise) | $30/user/month paid yearly, or $31.50/user/month paid monthly with an annual commitment; requires a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan | $300/month paid yearly · $315/month paid monthly |
| ChatGPT Business (Standard seat) | $20/user/month billed annually, or $25/user/month billed monthly; 2+ users | $200/month annual · $250/month monthly |
| Claude Team (claude.ai, Standard seat) | $20/seat/month billed annually, or $25/seat/month billed monthly; teams of 2 to 150 | $200/month annual · $250/month monthly |
Competitor list prices in USD, excluding tax; Copilot totals exclude the required Microsoft 365 plan. Prices change — check each vendor's page for current terms.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Plug and AI cost in Slack or Microsoft Teams?
$0 per month and no per-seat fee. You pay per use at AI provider rates from a prepaid balance shared by the whole Slack workspace or Microsoft Teams tenant. A 10% service fee is taken when you top up: a $10 top-up becomes $9 of credit. Every new workspace or tenant starts with $1.00 of free credit.
Is there a per-seat or per-user fee?
No. There is one shared credit balance per Slack workspace or Microsoft Teams tenant. Adding teammates adds no fixed cost — only the AI usage they generate is charged.
How does the 10% top-up fee work?
90% of each payment becomes usable credit and 10% is our service fee. For example, $10 becomes $9 of credit, $50 becomes $45, $100 becomes $90 and $250 becomes $225. If tax applies, credit is calculated on the pre-tax amount. You choose the amount at Stripe checkout — these are examples, not fixed packs.
Are the free models really free?
In Slack, the free model chain answers at $0 and works even with a $0 balance. Free models run on shared, rate-limited capacity, so when the free chain fails the bot retries once on a cheap paid model: a workspace with a positive balance is charged for that answer automatically, and the reply names the model that answered. A workspace at $0 can get that retry at no charge from a limited shared budget. In Microsoft Teams, chatting requires a positive tenant balance, including on the free chain.
How do I top up credits?
In Slack, open the Plug and AI App Home and click the "💳 Buy More Credits" button, which opens Stripe checkout for your workspace. In Microsoft Teams, open the PLAI Dashboard personal tab in Teams desktop or web (not mobile) and click "Top up"; Stripe checkout opens in your browser. Top-up is not shown in the Teams mobile app.
Does my Slack or Teams balance also work on plai.chat?
No. plai.chat is a separate web chat product with its own per-user balance; plai.chat top-ups carry the same 10% service fee ($10 → $9 of plai.chat credit). Credits bought for a Slack workspace or Teams tenant are used only in that workspace or tenant.
Do credits expire, and can they be refunded?
Under our Terms of Service, unused credits may expire 1 year after purchase and are non-refundable except as required by law.
